FAQ
Where are you located?
Our brand new studio is in the heart of NOHO at 324 Lafayette st (4th floor) between Houston and Bleecker. We will have our Chinatown open studio until June 1st. We hope to see you in class at Chinatown this month before we close our doors!
What does SKY TING mean?
Our first studio location in Chinatown, NYC was on the top floor of a pre-war building, with a big sky light and tons of windows. We wanted to find a name that embodied the light-filled physical studio space, the neighborhood that we loved, and our Katonah Yoga roots which are based in Chinese Medicine. We did some research around the word Sky Ting after stopping through our local bodega in Chinatown, Sky Ting Trading. We loved the sound of the name, loved that it was a blend of English and Chinese, loved that it was an homage to our teaching philosophy, and loved that it was from the neighborhood. Our Chinese friends said the word “ting” it could be interpreted a few ways depending on the context, but in Pinyin when using the 廷 character it could be courtyard or room. So with “sky” added to it we interpreted it as “sky courtyard” or “sky room”, a perfect name for our celestial feeling studio and the material we are teaching, which is centered around the esoteric dialogue between universe and self. It is with great reverence for both the Chinese culture and language that we carry this name. We will forever be indebted to the bodega Sky Ting Trading for their creation. We originally called ourselves SKY TING YOGA which we’ve now simplified to just SKY TING. While we still offer predominately yoga classes and trainings, covering a range of asana, pranayama, and meditation techniques, we continue to expand our offerings in a range of material. We will forever be changing, morphing, and blending as we continue to learn and grow. Our goal will continue to be cultivating practices that bring joy and improve well-being, while honoring the sources of our studies.
What type of yoga is SKY TING YOGA?
Yoga is a practice that was created, developed and codified in India, thousands of years ago. Over the centuries different lineages have emerged with shifts in society and lifestyle and the expansion of yoga being taught across the globe. At SKY TING, we embrace a wide variety of those lineages and our style is reflective of that blending. We believe that braiding a diverse pool of influences helps us create the strongest possible offering for the physical, emotional and cultural health and well being of our community. Our yoga classes are formatted around physical postures, with breathwork, meditation and philosophy woven throughout. The primary traditions we study and borrow from are Katonah Yoga (as taught by our mentor Nevine Michaan), Taoism, Iyengar, Ashtanga, Hatha and Vinyasa, as well as several different meditation and breathing practices. We recognize that much of the material we’ve been taught and that we have continued to teach thus far has been colonized in a way that does not honor the culture and people of India from which this work derives. SKY TING is on a journey of decolonization, which will be lifelong work. We look to foster a community of teachers willing to do this work as we challenge, push up against, and move away from the mutations that have devalued and appropriated Indian culture in a harmful way. The material we share from both Ancient India and China holds great power and value to the world today, and we will strive to make this material accessible and available to our students. We encourage all students of SKY TING to learn from teachers and leaders who have historically been left out of boutique wellness, who teach yoga as a tool for liberation and who honor the roots of this material. We recognize that much of the material we’ve been taught and that we have continued to teach thus far has been colonized in a way that does not honor the culture and people of India from which this work derives.
What type of yoga is KATONAH YOGA®?
Katonah Yoga is a syncretic Hatha yoga practice developed by Nevine Michaan over 40+ years. She and her teachers incorporate classical Hatha yoga with Taoist theory, geometry, magic, mythology, metaphor, and imagination — in a practical framework designed to potentiate personal and communal well-being. Framing the practice, maps of time and personal space are defined and refined. Themes using asana as origami, manipulating form for function, and developing a sense of personal measures are incorporated in Katonah Yoga practices. Katonah Yoga is organized around three principles of esoteric dialogue: all polarities are mediated by trinity; the universe has pattern, pattern implies intelligence; by virtue of repetition there is potential for insight. Revelations are revolutionary. Framing the practice, maps of time and personal space are defined and refined.
